“Every game day is people’s day,” said UNTV-BMPI CEO and MCGI Vice-Presiding Minister Kuya Daniel Razon. “There is only one goal. We are always thinking how to insert public service [in everything] because that is what UNTV does, [as] Your Public Service Channel,” remarked Bro. Razon.

The Presiding Minister to MCGI Bro. Eli Soriano was also in attendance via technology to kick-off the public service event. Bro. Eli thanked the players and audience of this season’s UNTV Cup for their continuous support for a worthwhile cause.

“Remember that this project [that] we are doing is for the benefit of others, and not for the benefit of ourselves,” stated Bro. Eli to the crowd in attendance in Smart Araneta, and those watching the event via UNTV 37 and UNTVweb.com.

The international preacher added that the players were also playing the role of Christ, who is the pioneer inspiration of doing good to others. “It’s like being Christ tonight; playing the role of Christ, doing good for the benefit of other people.”

The support for UNTV Cup 2 extended to social media sites as well, as audiences tweeted live updates from the first game night of the season. For ten straight hours, the hashtag #UNTVCupSeason2 was a trending topic on Twitter’s Philippine trends.

What’s New in Season 2

The second season of the UNTV Cup promises better games and better public service.

For each game day, each participating government agency will set up desks manned by their representatives. This is for the benefit of the game watchers and other citizens who would like to seek help and information regarding their various concerns.

Two more teams have been added to the roster of players for this year’s tournament. The first of which is the Senate Defenders, whose Team Captain is Sen. Sonny Angara Jr.

Other prominent members of the political community namely, Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Jinggoy Estrada are also part of the team’s roster of players.

The highest committee of the government also had its own team, the Malacañan Patriots, completing the ten teams of this season’s tournament.

With season 2 just beginning, UNTV Cup Commissioner Fortunato “Atoy” Co, already called upon the game’s supporters to watch out for season three. According to the PBA legend, they are already making plans to increase the cash prize of winners and anticipating more teams to sign up and play for charity.

The first game of this season commenced with the House of Representatives Solons versus the Senate Defenders. The Senate Defenders won the game by 83-72.

UNTV Cup, a brainchild of Bro. Daniel Razon, is a basketball tournament for a good cause. The game’s grand prize winner will get to donate their 1 million-peso grand prize to a charity of their choosing.

Team Judiciary was hailed as the previous season’s winner, and granted their 1 milion PHP earnings to institutions that care for the victims of calamities in Central Luzon and war in southern Philippines.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Hinirangs grabbed the second spot and gave their 500,000 prize money to the Masonic Charity for Crippled Children.

The Members Church of God International (MCGI) is rallying up support for the forthcoming second season of UNTV Cup, the Public Service Channel’s basketball league where cash prizes are donated to charities.

Bro. Daniel Razon, the Vice-Presiding Minister to MCGI, recently called on Church members and visitors to support the basketball tournament, which will bring in new participating government agencies and new public service innovations.

UNTV Cup, the only basketball game enjoining celebrities and government agencies for public service, opens another exciting and philanthropic season on February 11, 2014 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

New Teams, Bigger Public Service Innovation

Recently, UNTV introduced two new teams who are joining the coming edition of the tournament. The participation of Team Malacañan and Team Senate are welcome additions to the basketball league.

“We are very happy [to join this time] because we have watched and followed [the first season] on a weekly basis,” Major Paul Yamamoto said during the league’s kick-off celebration last January 14.

“It is basketball for a cause. This is a good motivation for our players – you are enjoying and playing while helping,” added Yamamoto, who will be acting as leader of Team Malacañan.

Meanwhile, Team Senate revealed that their line-up would include Senators Sonny Angara, Bam Aquino and Alan Cayetano. Atty. Dacsil is the leader of the team.

Teams Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Justice (DOJ), Metropolitan Metro Development Authority (MMDA), PhilHealth, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Congress, Local Government Unit (LGU) and Judiciary, the league’s defending champion, complete the UNTV Cup’s competing groups this season.

A Vehicle for Heightened Public Service

Apart from new players and teams, the fans and followers of UNTV Cup Season 2 can look forward to the heightened public service that the league will offer.

Kuya Daniel announced that the participating government agencies would put up booths that will serve as public service desks. These booths will be opened every game and help answer and provide assistance to people seeking help.

“If you have a complaint to PhilHealth, you can go the PhilHealth booth, if you have a complaint to PNP, you can go the PNP booth … they will have representatives and you can directly ask them,” the veteran broadcaster remarked during the season’s kick-off affair.

PNP will accommodate police clearance processing through its booth.

In the same occasion, Kuya Daniel recalled the origin of the basketball league. “I am fond of playing basketball since I was a kid. Now that I am older, I thought that we should not only play this game, [but] we should use this [basketball] as a vehicle for public service.”

In spite of being a competitive game, Kuya Daniel reminded that it is the intent of helping people that serves as UNTV Cup’s foundation.

“We are partners in public service. We are partners in serving our countrymen,” Kuya Daniel emphasized.
